~Metal Gear Solid 2 Sheds it's skin to reveal Substance~

The global mega hit "Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty" (SOL) now makes a reappearance while pursuing "enjoyment" and "expression" and adding new game play elements. With more areas and depth, "Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance" finally makes its appearance.

~VR Missions~

There are FOUR different types of VR missions, each with several kinds of stages.

SNEAKING MODE

There are 2 kinds of stages-"SNEAKING" missions that allow you to experience MGS's most basic fun of avoiding being spotted by the enemy and heading for the goal, and "ELIMATE ALL" missions in which the goal appears after taking out all eneimes.

A mode in which you practice using the weapons from SOL

"HAND GUN"

"ASSAULT RIFLE"

~Alternative Missions~

Realistic training utilizing SOL envirinments. Snake running around in the plant, diffusing bombs on the Tanker, etc.etc. provide "enjoyment" completely different from what you experienced in SOL.

BOMB DISPOSAL MODE

Diffuse bombs by finding them and freezing them. Discover the cleverly-hidden bombs with the first person view-the battle against time revisited.

ELIMINATION MODE

HOLD UP MODE

PHOTOGRAPH MODE

Take photos as instructed. Some of these are simple photoshooting, and others involve real thinking. Complete objectives involving various "themes"

~Snake Tales~
Five mini-games.  Each with its own story, and all starring Solid Snake. These take place on the Tanker and Big Shell, but the story lines DO NOT relate to the main Metal Gear story.  These were meant to give fans what they wanted in MGS2, more Snake.  There are barely any cutscenes,  no codecs, and no voice acting.  Instead you get a pages of very well-written text to set up the story. Enjoy!

A Wrongdoing

Solid Snake is sent to the Big Shell to save the President from a terrorist take over led by Fatman.  Colonel Ames appears in this story and is tied directly to Fatman's actions and the President's kidnapping.  In the end Snake will battle Fatman.

Big Shell Evil

Otacon sends Snake to the Big Shell to save Emma.  In the process you learn about the "Ghost of Big Shell".  In the end you must defeat the Harrier.

Confidential Legacy

Snake, in his MGS outfit, searches the Tanker for Meryl.  He soon learns that Meryl is working with Colonel Gurlukovich in attempts to secure Metal Gear.  In the end you must battle Meryl in a gunfight

Dead Man Whispers

During a training simulation on Big Shell, Vamp begins killing the Marines in hopes of taking revenge for his unit.  Snake, in the Pliskin persona, must race against time to stop Vamp from killing Commander Scott Dolph. In the end you battle Vamp

External Gazer

Parallel universes collide and reality is changing as Snake must hunt down a giant Monster, fight off Raiden's control, and save the universe from Solidus' plans.  A new Olga, good Fortune, demonic Jack and Rose, and Mei Ling dating Solidus!  In the end you must fight Solidus without any weapons.

~Hidden Characters~
Raiden - available at the start of the game as a selectable character.  He has the full range of mission types, and the difficulty for each one falls in the easy range.  He can easily get the No-Kill bonus.  Raiden's missions form the basis for all the other characters.

Raiden (Ninja) - Raiden dons the ninja suit, which essentially limits him to the use of the HF Blade for the entire set of missions.  Of course, this cuts down on the time you need to spend searching for weapons because you always start out with the blade.  It also means that all combat must occur at close range, making it impossible to eliminate guards from a distance.  Ninja Raiden becomes available after completing 50% of Raiden's missions.

X Raiden - For a change of pace, Raiden drops his outfit altogether and bares it all to the world.  He is now X Raiden!  X Raiden only has one set of missions, known as Streaking Mode.  You cannot use any weapons as X Raiden, and you must completely avoid the enemy to avoid embarrassment.  X Raiden becomes available after completing 100% of the Raiden (Ninja) missions.

Snake - Solid Snake is the other character who's available from the beginning.  Snake typically faces more enemies on each level than Raiden, but the difficulty is not much greater.  He also has the entire range of missions at his disposal.

Pliskin - Snake's alter ego, Pliskin, is armed to the teeth when he faces hi VR Missions.  He leans more towards lethal force, but stealth is still possible with a little effort.  In most cases, Pliskin's missions are modeled after Raiden's with some minor differences, such as less ammo or more guards.  Pliskin becomes available after completing 50% of Snake's missions.

Snake (Tuxeto) - In true James Bond fashion, Snake dresses in a tuxeto for a set of missions.  He always begins each level with an M9, so he can easily dispose of guards without killing them.  These missions are based on Snake's missions, with less ammo and more guards in some cases.  You must complete 100% of Pliskin's missions to unlock Snake (Tuxeto).

Snake (MGS1) - The final hidden character is none other than Solid Snake in his MGS1 outfit!  MGS1 Snake is by far the most difficult character to use.  He never has radar or enough ammo.  But that's not all!  The guards you'll face can see across entire levels and have hearing well beyond any normal soldier, and their weapons deal massive damage with a single shot.  They can also survive direct hits with Stinger missiles!  Essentially, the only effective way to deal with these guards is to shoot them in the head, heart, or groin, or to snap their necks. Most of the MGS1 Snake levels are so difficult that the same strategy may not work twice.  Perfect timing, creativity, and complete stealth are the only way to succeed.
~SkateBoarding~

This skating mini-game is based on Konami "Evolution Skateboarding" title.  Snake and Raiden will be able to skateboard on the Big Shell.  Due to porting difficulties, however, this option is only available on the PlayStation 2 version of Substance

~Sons of Liberty~
The mega-hit of 2001 Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty is included, in its entirety, in MGS2 Substance.  The story is identical.  However, things that never made it to the American MGS2 are now included such as fixed text and added cut scenes for those times where you're thinking "Um..how did he get over there?". The game's difficulty levels are also more focused. the easier levels are made more easier, but also the more difficult levels are made more difficult. The Shaver is also the "extra prize" for playing on the hard modes.

Boss Survival and Casting Theater, features that were only included in the Japanese and European versions, made their way into Substance.

Boss Survival

Take on every boss in MGS2 one after another in several different choices of difficulty.  You can play as either Snake or Raiden.  You are timed on your performance.

Casting Theater

You are given several cut scenes from MGS2 and are given options to changing the models.  You can see an army of Raidens infiltrating the Tanker or Snake from MGS battle Ninja from MGS2 on top of Federal Hall.  A lot of different options to play with.
